交谈的艺术，主要体现在交谈时机的捕捉和交谈方式的运用上。一般地说，家长和孩子双方在情绪不佳时，特别是在气头上，不要交谈；在事情的原委还没有搞清楚时，不要交谈；有局外人特别是有客人在场时，请不要做批评性的交谈；在饭桌上，在孩子睡觉前，也不宜做批评性的交谈。家庭教育的特点是“遇物则诲”，所以教育的时机要灵活掌握，一切从教育的需要，特别是教育的效果出发，以孩子能接受为准则。交谈的方式可以多种多样，如漫谈式、调查式、激励式、严肃批评教育式等都可采用。其中的漫谈式，即不拘时间、地点、内容，海阔天空、轻松愉快地交谈，常常是孩子欢迎交谈方式。
